How to make book promo Shorts and Reels with AI
Use a book you are allowed to promote, pick one job for the clip, draft the hook before the pictures, then review the voice, captions, and destination. This is the workflow ShortsHQ actually runs.
Start from material you are allowed to use
A book promo short is a small argument for opening the book. It can be a trailer, a marked-up excerpt, or a person telling the reader why this chapter matters. The clip is only as clean as the source. Use your own manuscript, a blurb you wrote, a cover you have rights to, or an excerpt your contract allows you to quote. If you are promoting someone else's book, get permission before you paste their pages into a generator.
In ShortsHQ the book trailer screen collects the title, the author, the genre, the mood, the themes, the target audience, and either a synopsis or manuscript text. Synopsis mode is the fast path: paste the back-cover blurb or a short description. Upload mode is for a longer passage. The screen states that the original manuscript is not stored and that the product keeps the AI analysis. Treat that analysis as a draft of scenes and emotions, then correct names, spellings, and anything the model smoothed over.
Add the retailer link only when you want the caption to carry it. The trailer flow has a field for an Amazon URL, and the suggested caption can include that link with a short hook. A link in the caption is a convenience. It does not measure sales, and it does not replace the disclosure rules of the platform where you post.
Pick one job for the clip
Three jobs cover most author shorts, and ShortsHQ has a screen for each. A trailer sells the premise and the feeling. An excerpt clip sells a sentence. A talking update sells the person behind the book, or a presenter speaking the hook. Mixing all three into one 20-second file usually blurs the point. Make one clip per job, then schedule them as a series if you want a week of posts.
- Book trailer: title, genre, synopsis or manuscript analysis, hook line, captions, and hashtags. Use this when the reader needs the world and the stakes.
- Kindle screenshot video: an authorized excerpt, highlight colors, red strikethrough, and blur for a spoiler. Use this when the prose itself is the hook.
- Talking update: a short script in Avatar Studio with a HeyGen avatar, a voice, and a 9:16 frame. Use this when a face, even a synthetic one, should deliver the news of a launch, a trope, or a content warning.
Vertical 9:16 is the format Create selects for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts. You can also render 16:9, 1:1, or 4:5 when the destination is a YouTube layout or an Instagram feed. Match the frame to the app before you spend the voice allowance on a read that will be cropped.
Write the hook and the script before you generate pictures
The hook is the first line a stranger hears. For a thriller it might be the consequence. For a romance it might be the refusal. For nonfiction it might be the useful surprise. Write that line in your own words, or start from a prompt you saved in the prompt library. Create can generate a script draft from a selected prompt and the active channel profile. Read it out loud. Cut any sentence that explains the ending, invents a review quote, or promises a sales rank.
A practical trailer script is short. Aim for a spoken length that fits the clip you can actually post, often well under a minute. Open on the hook, give one concrete image from the book, name the feeling, and stop. The book trailer output includes a hook line and caption text you can edit. Keep the caption aligned with the spoken script so the on-screen words and the voice do not argue.
Save the prompt if you will make another clip for the same series. The prompt library stores a title, the prompt text, a category, tags, an optional source, and a usage count. Loading the sample prompts gives you a starting shelf. Replace those samples with your own genre formulas so the next book does not inherit a burial-ritual script by accident.
Choose voice and visuals that match the scene
Voice comes from ElevenLabs on the default path. Create offers voice directions such as authoritative, warm, energetic, calm, storyteller, and newsreader. The book trailer screen can preview a voice before you commit. Narration spends 1 credit per 150 characters. Monthly narration character allowances are 30,000 on Basic, 82,500 on Pro, 180,000 on Prime, and 480,000 on Premium. A long manuscript read will burn that allowance faster than a 20-second hook, so draft the script first and generate speech once.
Visuals have a default and two deliberate upgrades. The default Create engine uses stock B-roll with the ElevenLabs voice and burned-in captions. That is the right default for a faceless promo when a harbor, a street, a library, or a pair of hands can stand in for the scene. Kling is available when you opt into generated scene footage and want a shot that stock cannot supply. HeyGen, through Avatar Studio, is the path for a talking avatar. Pick one visual system per clip so the short looks intentional.
Captions are part of the picture. Create can burn in bold white text, a yellow highlight, or a word-by-word style, or you can leave captions off. Most people watch book clips with the sound off first. Put the hook in the caption as well as in the voice. If you highlight an excerpt in the Kindle tool, let the highlight be the caption. Do not add a second joke on top of the sentence.
Music can come from the music library included with the paid plans that list it. If you upload a track from somewhere else, you need the license for short-form posting. A loud score under a quiet excerpt makes the sentence harder to read. For a Kindle clip, silence or a low bed is often clearer than a trailer sting.
Brand the clip with the book, then review it
Set a channel profile for the author or the series before you generate. The profile holds the name, a description, a website, a logo, an audience persona, a tone of voice, and a niche. Brand assets attached to that profile can include a logo, an end card, a screenshot, an overlay, or a background, placed at the start, the end, as an overlay, or as a watermark. A logo on the end card is enough for most book clips. A watermark on every line of an excerpt usually fights the text.
Review is the step the product keeps putting in front of you. Check the character names, the genre label, the content warning, and the retailer link. Check that a generated scene does not depict a real person you did not license. Check that the avatar script does not claim a bestseller list, a review, or a reader count you cannot show. Then export. Kindle screenshot videos and Avatar Studio can hand you a rendered file. The default Create export is the stock short you assembled.
Post only after you confirm the destination
Connect the account that should receive the clip. Supported platforms in the product are TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X. The connection is per account, and it depends on that platform's app credentials being configured. On the publish screen you choose the video, the connected account, the platform, the caption, and the time. Status moves through pending, scheduled, published, or failed. A failure message stays on the schedule so you can see that the post did not go out.
Pro includes video series drip scheduling. You can group several trailer angles or chapter teasers, set an interval in days, and mark the series draft, active, paused, or completed. That is the orderly way to post a launch week. It is still your series: pause it if a caption is wrong. Auto mode in the workspace is backed by those series, with a niche, platforms, and a frequency. It does not skip the requirement that an authorized account is connected.
- Gather the blurb, the excerpt, and the buy link you are allowed to use.
- Create or select the author channel profile and upload the logo or end card.
- Draft the hook in the prompt library or directly in the book trailer, Kindle, or Avatar screen.
- Generate voice with ElevenLabs, and choose stock footage, Kling scene footage, or a HeyGen avatar.
- Read the captions, the names, and the link. Export the file.
- Schedule the post to a connected account, or download the file and upload it yourself.
Questions people ask
How do I make a book promo short with AI?
In ShortsHQ, start from a synopsis or an authorized excerpt, write a hook, generate an ElevenLabs voiceover, pair it with stock footage, a Kling scene, or a HeyGen avatar, add captions, and review the file before you export or schedule it.
Can I paste my whole manuscript?
The book trailer screen accepts a synopsis or uploaded manuscript text for analysis. The product says the original manuscript is not stored and that it keeps the AI analysis. You still need the rights to submit that text.
What size should a BookTok or Reels promo be?
Use 9:16 for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. ShortsHQ also offers 16:9, 1:1, and 4:5 when the destination needs a different frame.
Will the short include my Amazon link?
You can add an Amazon or other retailer URL in the book trailer fields so the suggested caption can carry it. You review that caption before it is posted.
Does this workflow guarantee views or sales?
No. The workflow produces a draft you can post. Reach, watch time, and retailer sales depend on the book, the account, the platform, and the audience. ShortsHQ does not promise those outcomes.
